What a Wedding Venue Costs by Guest Count

The short answer

Venue cost per guest falls sharply as the guest list grows. In 2,455 priced quote requests on WedStay, a venue with on-site lodging comes to a median of $461 per guest with under 40 guests and $119 per guest with 150 or more guests. The national median quote is $13,827 for a 2-night buyout hosting 75 guests. The estate price rises far more slowly than the headcount, so the per-guest figure is mostly the same total spread over more people.

The table

Wedding venue cost by guest count

Each row is the median of priced quote requests for that guest list size. Cost per guest is the venue and on-site lodging quote divided by attending guests. Total for the stay is the median quote for the whole buyout, typically 2 nights.

Under 40 guests$461$10,21925262A whole estate shared by a short list. Most of the quote is the fixed property price.
40 to 59 guests$262$12,50448574The fixed price still dominates, so every guest you add lowers the per-guest figure quickly.
60 to 79 guests$192$13,12769415Around the typical guest count. The per-guest curve begins to flatten here.
80 to 99 guests$152$13,18787219Per-guest savings continue, but each added guest now saves less than in the bands below.
100 to 149 guests$133$14,443110611Charges for guests above the headcount a property includes start to add to the total.
150 or more guests$119$19,127179374Only larger estates host lists this size, so the total is highest, but it is spread over the most people.

Medians are computed separately, so cost per guest is not the total divided by the average guests. Catering, florals, photography, and travel are not included in any figure on this page.

The curve

Why cost per guest falls as the list grows

An estate buyout prices mainly on the property and the nights, not the headcount. From the smallest band to the largest, the median quote rises 87% while the average guest list grows about 7 times. The same fixed price spreads over more people, so the per-guest figure drops fastest at the small end and flattens out as the list gets long. Catering behaves differently: it is usually priced per person, so the food bill keeps growing with every guest.

What it looks like at 40, 100, and 150 guests

These are illustrations from the band medians, not quotes. Each takes the median quote for the band a guest count falls in and spreads it over exactly that many guests. Your real price depends on the property, the dates, and the nights you book.

How it compares

Buyout pricing vs. a per-person venue or catering minimum

Many traditional venues charge per guest, or require a food and beverage minimum before the room is yours. Those models scale with headcount, so the cost per guest stays roughly level as the list grows. A whole-property buyout works the other way round, which is why guest count matters so much when you compare the two.

Estate buyout

  • One price for the whole property and the nights booked
  • Lodging for the guests who sleep on site is in the same figure
  • Cost per guest falls as the guest list grows
  • Small guest lists pay for space they may not fill

Per-person venue or catering minimum

  • Price grows with every guest added
  • A minimum spend sets a floor, whatever the headcount
  • Guest rooms are usually a separate hotel block
  • Small guest lists can come out ahead

By state

Wedding venue cost by state

The Wedding Venue Cost Index tracks a different figure: the base price to rent the whole estate for its minimum stay, from live listings rather than quote requests, before cleaning, service fee, and tax. As of October 2026, the US median base is $8,000 per stay across 110 listings. Among the 7 states with at least 5 listings, New York and Utah share the lowest median at $6,000 and Florida has the highest median at $12,000.

Methodology

Figures come from 2,455 venue-plus-lodging quote requests submitted by 1,932 couples across 110 US properties in 22 states, over the twelve months ending October 2026. These are priced quote requests, not completed bookings. Every price was generated by WedStay's pricing engine against the couple's real dates and real guest count, so these are quoted prices rather than survey recall, and none were negotiated or entered by hand. We keep US properties only, require a stated guest count and a stay of one to seven nights, and report medians because estate pricing is right-skewed. Requests are grouped into six bands by attending guests. A quote covers exclusive use of the property, all on-site lodging for the stay, the event fee, per-guest charges above base occupancy, cleaning, service and tax. It excludes catering, florals, photography, and anything guests pay for off site. No individual couple or per-property rate is ever exposed. The same sample powers the Wedding Weekend Report.

Questions

Wedding venue cost by guest count, answered

How much does a wedding venue cost for 100 guests?
As of October 2026, a venue with on-site lodging for 100 to 149 guests has a median quote of $14,443 on WedStay, or a median of $133 per guest. Spread over exactly 100 guests, that median quote works out to about $144 per guest. The quote covers exclusive use of the property, on-site lodging for the stay, the event fee, charges for guests above the included headcount, cleaning, service and tax. Catering, florals and photography are extra.
What is the average cost per guest for a wedding venue?
The median is $187 per attending guest for the venue and on-site lodging together, across 2,455 priced quote requests on WedStay, with the middle half between $128 and $307. We report the median rather than the mean because estate pricing is right-skewed. The figure depends heavily on guest count: it runs from $461 per guest with under 40 guests to $119 with 150 or more guests.
How much is a wedding venue for 50 guests?
As of October 2026, a venue with on-site lodging for 40 to 59 guests has a median quote of $12,504 on WedStay, or a median of $262 per guest. Spread over exactly 50 guests, that median quote works out to about $250 per guest. Catering, florals and photography are extra.
How much is a wedding venue for 150 guests?
As of October 2026, a venue with on-site lodging for 150 or more guests has a median quote of $19,127 on WedStay, or a median of $119 per guest. Spread over exactly 150 guests, that median quote works out to about $128 per guest. The quote covers exclusive use of the property, on-site lodging for the stay, the event fee, charges for guests above the included headcount, cleaning, service and tax. Catering, florals and photography are extra.
Is a bigger wedding cheaper per guest?
For the venue, yes. Between the smallest and largest guest bands the median quote rises 87% while the average guest list grows about 7 times, so the venue cost per guest falls from $461 to $119. Catering usually works the other way: it is often priced per person, so the food bill grows with every guest even as the venue share shrinks.
What does the venue quote include?
Each quote is for a whole-property buyout and covers exclusive use of the property, on-site lodging for the stay, the event fee, charges for guests above the included headcount, cleaning, service and tax. It does not include catering, florals, photography, or anything guests pay for off site. Rooms for the guests who sleep on site are part of the same figure, so those guests need no separate hotel block.
Where does this wedding venue cost data come from?
Every figure is computed from 2,455 venue-plus-lodging quote requests submitted by 1,932 couples across 110 US properties in 22 states, over the twelve months ending October 2026. Each price was generated by WedStay's pricing engine against the couple's real dates and real guest count, so these are quoted prices rather than survey recall, and none were negotiated or typed in by the couple. They are quote requests, not completed bookings. A state is reported only when it draws on at least 5 distinct properties with no single property above 40% of the cut. No individual couple or per-property rate is ever exposed.
